Boat Transport Questions & Answers!

How do you calculate the costs for a Boat Transport?

First of all we run the route needed to calculate miles. Then we figure out the miles that we will need a escort, if needed on. It really is simple math. At times we need to account for deadhead miles if the Boat is not on the beaten path and factor that into the Boat Transport also.

Why are escorts needed for a Boat Transport?

All states have their own rules and regulations concerning the issuing of permits. All states are not the same. When a Boat Transporter applies for permits to transport a oversize Boat through their state, the individual state issues the permit with conditions. The conditions may include escorts and how many are needed, curfews that will be in effect, police escorts if needed. As a Boat Transporter, we need to follow them to the letter.

How big of Boat can be safely transported on the highway?

Generally speaking we have transported Boats as large as 18 wide and 18 tall and 65000 lbs. Up in the north east this presents its own problems but if the Boat falls into these parameters, the Boat can be safely transported.

Do I need to have all the fuel out of the Boat before it is transported?

No generally not. When the Boat to be transported is a large Boat, over 40ft or so. We like to have as much fuel out before it is transported for safety reasons and weight. Sail Boats do not carry enough fuel to make this a problem.

Does my flybridge need to be removed be for it is transported?

Generally if a Boat has a overall height of 13.6 or so, the flybridge will need to come off due to the costs involved in transporting a over height Boat. But on short runs of say 500 miles or so, it is not cost effective to remove it. It would be better to transport the Boat with it on and pay for a pole car to escort the Boat.

Is it better to use a Boat Transporter directly or use a broker like yourself?

That is a very good question. First of all, there are good and bad brokers as there are good and bad transporters. A good Boat Transport broker will know the right transporter to do the job. We have already made the mistakes of using bad Boat Transport companies and we don’t use them again. They make our job very difficult, not to mention our reputation. The first question you should ask any broker is have you ever moved a Boat yourself? A lot of brokers are .com companies with little to no experience transporting Boats. That is why they generally take forever to get a quote done. They simply do not know all the state regulations etc. Nor do they know first hand what is involved in transporting Boats across the nation. There are good and bad Boat Transporters as well. We as brokers have already figured out the good from the bad.
