Boat Transport Of The Month
December, 2007
Overview
We were called in to transport this Coast Guard Boat from South Carolina to California by Butch Monk. He was representing the Coast Guard, and specializes in transporting military cargo in the United States. As the story goes, another Boat Transporter originally accepted the contract to transport this Boat from Virginia to California. It took him 90 some odd days to go from Virginia to South Carolina!!! The Coast Guard and Butch were not very impressed with the performance that was being delivered. Their confidence level was depleted to a point that they were fired off the job. Grant you this was a big Boat, 55 feet long, over 17 feet wide and almost 18 feet tall. This Boat weighed in at 68,000 pounds, a big girl! This is a model case of low bid won the contract, and without the experience and the proper equipment, problems quickly arose.
When our contract was in order we immediately started going through the logistics of getting route surveys in order, permits ordered, and qualified pilot cars lined up to transport this Boat. It took two weeks to do the preliminary logistical outlining to find an appropriate route, get approval of the necessary states we would be transporting through. We have moved many military Boats across the country but never one of this caliber.
It took us a full month to deliver this Boat from South Carolina to California. We never saw the interstate as we were routed on secondary roads all the way. More importantly we transported this Coast Guard Boat over 4000 routed miles with out incident, no damage was incurred. Although we are known for transporting some of the largest Boats in the country, this Boat is truly a feather in our cap. We learned a lot on this move, from the logistics to just how many tires to carry as spares!!
