SailBoat Transport Preparation Guide

This page is designed to address some of the most common questions concerned in decommissioning a sailBoat for transport. For the most part it is all common sense.

Boat Transport Questions & Answers!

It is a no brainer that the mast needs to be removed! When the mast is removed from the sailBoat and properly resting on cradles it needs to be partially disassembled. First thing is to remove the standing rigging. It is best to pull one piece off at a time and coil it up and mark where it came from. This makes quick work when it comes time to put the rig back together. The spreaders need to come off and stowed. The halyards need to be brought up tight and coiled at the base of the mast. All electronic antennas need to be removed from the top, as do the Windex etc. These of coarse are delicate and do not travel well attached.

A really good way of keeping the mast clean and dust free, keeping in mind the winches and sheaves don't like dirt is to wrap the mast in cellophane. Wrap it like a candy cane.

When transporting a sailBoat ,if the anchor is in a roller on the bow it needs to be removed and stowed. Simply securing it up tight is not good enough.

All deck gear needs to be stowed when preparing a sailBoat for transport. This may include dorades. All lines that may be led aft to the cockpit need to be secured as well.

We are not concerned with the amount of fuel in the tanks when transporting a sailBoat as most sailBoats do not carry enough fuel to present a problem. Water tanks if possible need to be drained. During the winter, the sailBoat needs to be prepped as you would during your seasonal winterization to ward off freezing problems.

As far as the interior is concerned while hauling your sailBoat, use a little common sence Articles that may fall or bounce around need to be stowed properly.

Jim, I have to admit the additional moneys spent on you moving my Boat was worth every penny! You said it would go off with out a hitch and you were right. It still amazes me how you can move a 45 foot Hunter sailBoat from Annapolis Maryland to Seattle Washington in six days with out any problems. I will plug you company any chance I get. Once again thank you.

You guys are the best, having moved my fifty foot Columbia sailBoat three times in its lifetime, I have never had such a good experience. From Fort Lauderdale Florida to San Francisco California all with in the schedule you stated.

Jim, My wife and I were told you were the one who could make our Boat move happen and you did. What a fine job of it you did as well. Moving a 65,000 sailBoat from California to South Carolina was no easy feat. A superb job. I will give your name as a referral to any one needing a Boat Transported.

Seattle here we come!!!! The Boat just left the marina under full escort on its way to Seattle. I appreciate all the time you spent on this job of getting our Hunter sail Boat Transported to Washington. I hope I can beat him there, we will see!!!

Thank you again
Dan Potts

The Boat arrived here in Wisconsin today and it looks the same as it did when it left Florida. You were not kidding when you said your trucks don’t blow black smoke. You did a fine job and my hat is off to your driver. I know it was not easy logistically moving a 45 foot Hunter sailBoat 1500 miles in this weather.

Jim, I would like to take the time to thank you and your driver for an outstanding job you all did transporting our Yacht “Miss Behavin” a 50 custom sail Boat, from Alameda California to Charleston, South Carolina. From the beginning you displayed a very knowlgable, professional demeanor. After being referred to you by a few people in the business in California as being one of the best transporters in the country, I can only say I am glad I went with you. Although your quote was a bit higher than most, you provided a good value for our money. The entire transport went as planned and never had a reason for doubt, or concern. I would like to again extend from myself and my family our sincere thanks.

Cheers
Godfrey Veal

Moving our 45 foot Hunter sailBoat it seems was right up your ally. Thank you the terrific service you provided. You loaded our sailBoat on a Monday in Rhode Island and had it at the marina in Florida by Friday. Very cool.

I truly enjoyed working with you all At Hays Marine Transport. From the first conversation I had with Jim, I knew he was the man for the job of transporting my Catalina 42 sail Boat from South Carolina to Seattle Washington. His knowledge of sailBoats and sailing in general led me to believe he was very competent. You guys were on time at both ends, actually a little early in Seattle!!!

Thank you
Mary Kline

I loved your website and I loved your service. Transporting our sailBoat from Maine to Florida was no easy task. You rose to the occasion and did a superb job of it. My new “Yacht” is at home.
